Introduction
Normal liver functions are important for every organ system of the body to function and maintain life. The liver is responsible for the production of essential plasma proteins, the metabolism and detoxification of drugs, the absorption of critical nutrients, and carbohydrate metabolism. Liver disease can vary in severity from sub-clinical to end-stage liver disease (ESLD), with life threatening, multi-organ multi-system failure. Anaesthetic and operative risks are related to the severity of liver dysfunction. Pre-operative assessment and peri operative anesthetic care is essential for safe outcome. A good understanding of the pathophysiology of liver dysfunction is vital for assessment of operative risk. In this session you will learn to adopt knowledge, skill and attitude in safe management of anesthesia for a patient with liver disease.
