Anemia is a common blood disorder of perioperative patients. Anemia may be produced or exacerbated by the surgical procedure and postoperative care. The physiologic consequence of severe anemia to the surgical patient is inadequate delivery of oxygen that may lead to tissue hypoxia, organ dysfunction and ultimately organ damage. Mismanagement of the anemic surgical patient can adversely affect perioperative morbidity and mortality. To provide optimal care for anemic surgical patients, the anesthetist should understand the need to assess anemia, as well as the various etiologies and classifications of anemia. In this session you will learn the basic knowledge, relevant skill and right attitude in diagnosing, and managing anemia preoperatively and administering safe anesthesia for the surgical procedure.
