In study session II you have learned about anaesthetic risk in obstetric patients and the general approach employed in provision of anestheisia for obstetric patients. In addition you also have learned about the techniques of providing spinal and general anesthesia for caesarean section. In this study session you will learn about anesthesia during pregnancy for non obstetric procedures, as pregnant women may receive anesthesia for various surgical indications during their pregnancy. Hence, an appreciation of the effects of different anesthetic drugs and techniques in such situations is essential in the care of these women; this study session also addresses the effects of different anaesthetic drugs in pregnant women. In addition, anaesthetic consideration for pregnant women to ensure maternal safety, fetal well-being, and continuation of pregnancy will be covered. Over all at the end of the lesson students are expected to describe appropriate drug choice and apply safe anesthetic technique for obstetric clients who come for non obstetric surgery.
