Woman breastfeeding her child

Prevention of pregnancy through exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months after birth.

What are the three conditions that must be fulfilled for LAM to be effective?

Show answer

LAM is appropriate for any young woman who has given birth no more than six months ago, is postpartum, fully or nearly fully breastfeeding, and whose periods have not yet returned (she is amenorrheaic). This method may be difficult for young people unless they have a stable lifestyle that is conducive to frequent breastfeeding. The LAM method does not provide protection against STIs/HIV, therefore you should encourage condom use as well.
