In this Study Session, you have learned that:

  • Disability is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.
  • Environmental and social barriers are the major causes of disability for individuals experienced disability with some forms of impairment.
  • Disability is not something individuals "have", but has a wider social meaning. It is the exclusion of people with impairments due to attitudinal and environmental barriers that limit their full and equal participation in the life of the community and society at large.
  • The aim of community-based rehabilitation (CBR) is to help people with disabilities, by establishing community-based programs for social integration, equalisation of opportunities, and rehabilitation programs for the disabled.
  • Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) focuses on enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families; meeting basic needs, and ensuring inclusion and participation.
  • Community-based rehabilitation of disables is a multi-sectoral strategy that has to be implemented through the combined efforts of people with disabilities, their families and communities, and relevant government and non-government organizations (health, education, vocational, social and other service providers ) to empower persons with disabilities, access and benefit from social services (education, employment, health and other social services).
