In the previous sessions i.e. session 2, 3 and 4, you learnt about mental health, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which are among the common non-communicable chronic diseases.

In this study session you will learn more about another common non-communicable disease, cancer. Cancer is one of the common non-communicable diseases that cause a great health and economic burden especially in developing countries like Ethiopia where its management remains expensive.

As cancer is a complex disease that can develop in and affects any parts of the body, early detection of cases and community education on its prevention methods are the most important measures that health extension workers can do in their community.

As cancer has no specific and clear cause, this study session helps you to have a clear understanding about the different types of cancers including the predisposing factors (risk factors), common types of cancers and preventive measures of cancer. Having the basic understandings on cancer enables you to: educate your community about cancer prevention, risk reduction, screen the common types of cancers, detect and refer cases of suspected cancer cases in your community.
