Remember your health education course in module 2; you have learnt that health education is the components of all the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention of diseases and disability.

Therefore, as there is no effective measures for a radical cure from most of chronic non-communicable diseases, the best coping mechanism is providing intensive health education and community mobilisation on the prevention of these diseases.

The prevention strategies focus on avoiding the risk and predisposing factors and by adhering to practices of a healthy lifestyle. The modalities of delivering community education have to consider the basic principles of health education.

Basic principles of health education:

a. Planning and organising are essential for health education. It needs consideration of resource planning, preparation, identification of targets, etc.).
b. Health education is based on scientific findings and current knowledge.
c. Health education is the responsibility of the community as a whole.
d. A differentiated and targeted approach in health education (designed specifically for certain targets of the population, i.e. young/ old etc).
e. Select the methods and supporting materials depending on:
  • The type of message.
  • The purpose of the delivering the message.
  • The people addressed / target / and the circumstances.
