Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is one of the leading causes of child morbidity and mortality in Ethiopia and the world. Pneumonia is the most serious outcome of ARI in young children. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can prevent a large proportion of deaths that can result from pneumonia.

Ethiopia has one of the highest under-five mortality rates with more than 321,000 under-five children die every year. More than 70% of these child deaths are due to five diseases, namely pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, measles and malnutrition, and often to a combination of these conditions. The major causes of under-five mortality have been estimated to be pneumonia 28% of mortality in under-five children.

In this study session, you will learn how to assess and classify a sick child with a cough or difficult breathing. You will also learn how to treat and give follow-up care.
