In this Study Session, you have learned that;

  • Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the infants at least eight times per day and at any time, the child wants until the age reach to six months and also after the age of six-month breast milk is given to the children at any time the child wants in addition to complementary food.
  • There are various types of breastfeeding recommendations according to children age, and you can counsel the mothers how to feed their children according to their age. You should teach the mothers to give appropriate feeding according to the approved recommendations.
  • The techniques of breastfeeding are good attachment, positioning and sucking so; you can counsel the mother about good positioning, attachment, and sucking.
  • Poor positioning and attachment make the children insufficient intake of breastfeeding; these conditions can expose the children to a lot of infection and decrease growth development.
  • Replacement feeding is replacing breast milk with other food like cow, goat and formula or commercial feed you assess the mother's condition and help her to choose the best of her replacement feeding for her child based on AFASS criteria.
  • Playing and communication build child's physical and mental well-being and increases the creativity of children. You should encourage the mother or the caregivers to play and communicate with their children.
