In Module 11, you will learn in detail about the complications you encounter in the third stage of labour. These complications lead to maternal morbidity and mortality. Among these complications, (Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH)) is the leading cause of anemia or poor iron reserves. Anemia may cause weakness and fatigue. Hospitalisation may be prolonged, and the establishment of breastfeeding may be affected.

To minimise the risks of PPH in this critical stage of labour, a set of procedures have been developed that all birth attendants should follow, and it is called Active Management of Third Stage of Labour (AMTSL). If correctly applied, AMSTL can reduce the risk of postpartum haemorrhage by more than 60%.

In this study session, you will learn what AMTSL is and the procedures you will conduct during each of its six steps. This knowledge will help you to identify the complications that may arise during the third stage of labour and manage them more effectively.
