WHO’s four prong approach to PMTCT
The comprehensive approach to PMTCT services involves four strategic elements:
a) Primary prevention of HIV infection: minimising the transmission of HIV to women.b) Prevention of unintended pregnancies among women with HIV: improving women's access to information, education, sexual, RH and FP services.
c) Prevention of HIV transmission from mothers with HIV to their infants:
- Increasing women's access to ART.
- Provide ARV prophylaxis for the newborn.
- Ensuring safer delivery procedures.
- Reducing transmission through breastfeeding.
