The comprehensive approach to PMTCT services involves four strategic elements:

a) Primary prevention of HIV infection: minimising the transmission of HIV to women.
b) Prevention of unintended pregnancies among women with HIV: improving women's access to information, education, sexual, RH and FP services.

c) Prevention of HIV transmission from mothers with HIV to their infants:

  • Increasing women's access to ART.
  • Provide ARV prophylaxis for the newborn.
  • Ensuring safer delivery procedures.
  • Reducing transmission through breastfeeding.
d) Care, support, and treatment for mothers living with HIV, their children, and families: to improve the health of the mother and the family to the extent possible. These also include prevention and treatment of OI (ART, positive living, nutritional supplements, social and psychological support and peer (mother support groups).
