- Elements of communication include the sender (source), the receiver (audience), the message, the channel and the feedback.
- Effective communicator should have qualities like the full attention of the other person, clarity in speaking, conveying clear and simple messages, encouraging the receiver to speak openly, giving full attention to the receiver, listening carefully, etc.
- In taking the history from young people establishing a good relationship is a helpful approach in order to obtain valuable information especially on sensitive matters. It is, therefore, advantageous to start history taking with the non-sensitive or least sensitive issues and then progress to sensitive matters.
- In doing the physical examination, it is important to focus on the most important aspects of the presenting condition of the youth in less stressful manner and includes temperature, pulse rate, anaemia, checking under-nutrition, checking for the presence of swelling or tenderness in the abdomen.
