The need for first aid training and its value is greater than ever because of population growth throughout the world and the increased use of technological products; such as mechanical and electrical appliances in everyday life at home, working place and recreational areas, which in turn sometimes can make people at risk of injury.

In general, first aid is aimed to help for others, preparation for knowing what to do during accidents or disaster as well as to help self. The objectives of first aid are to restore life, to prevent the occurrence of complication and minimise human suffering from injuries or accidents. Therefore; as a Health Extension Service (HES) worker working at a grass root level with the community, you may face to some injuries, accidents /disasters/ of various degrees at the individual level, family level or community level. The two major competencies covered in this module are provided first aid and respond to emergency specified in level three Occupational standards.

Therefore; to provide the required first aid at your level, it is mandatory to equip you with the knowledge, skill and attitude of first aid. This first aid module contains three broad study sessions. Study sessions 1 & 2 briefly describes the assessment and Identification of client's condition and study session 3 discusses providing First Aid service and referral. This module will help you to learn and acquire the basic concepts and principles of first aid so as to enable you to deliver the service appropriately.
