In this Study Session, you have learned that:

  • Advocacy refers to the communication strategies focusing on policy makers, community leaders and opinion leaders to gain commitment and support. It is an appeal for a higher level commitment, involvement and participation in fulfilling a set program agenda.
  • Advocacy is working with other people and organisations to improve the health of the community.
  • The first two steps in any advocacy campaign are selecting the health issue that needs advocacy work, and then developing the goals and objectives
  • Involving leaders in the process of advocacy campaign is one the major approach to convince policy makers.
  • Promotion and protection of a community's well-being and rights' focuses on a core function of health advocacy.
  • Without a clear, articulated issue and well-defined goals and objectives, the remaining steps of the advocacy campaign will lose focus.
  • You should build support, develop your message, identify channels of communication, and mobilise resources to implement your planned advocacy activities.
