Despite the availability of highly effective methods of contraception, many pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted. These pregnancies carry a higher risk of morbidity and mortality for women, often due to unsafe abortion. Many of these unplanned pregnancies can be avoided by using emergency contraception. Emergency contraception is the use of either hormonal pills (oestrogen and progestin or progestin alone) or a copper-bearing IUCD to prevent an unintended pregnancy following exposure to unprotected intercourse.

In this study session, you will learn about the type of emergency contraceptives methods available in Ethiopia, their effectiveness and other related information.
