Summary
In this Study Session, you have learned that:
- Implants are small plastic rods or capsules and placed under the skin on the inside of a woman's arm. These tubes contain the hormone progestin and work like mini pills. There are four types of contraceptive implants. These are Norplant, Jadelle, Implanon and Sino-implant
- Implanon implant is very flexible; one small plastic rod placed under the skin of upper arm and contains progesterone hormones. It works mainly by thickening the cervical mucus and by stopping ovulation. The rod is usually not visible and does not leave a noticeable scar if inserted and removed correctly. Implanon is a very highly effective contraceptive method, and its effectiveness is close to 100%.
- During the first months, the implants may cause irregular bleeding (in the middle of their monthly cycle) or more days of monthly bleeding. Or they may have no bleeding at all. This does not mean that they are pregnant or that something is wrong. These changes will go away as their body becomes used to having more progestin
- Insertion of Implanon is performed directly from the sterile, preloaded applicator. A surgical incision before insertion is not necessary. Both insertion and removal of Implanon are quick and easy procedures.
