Principles of counselling
Counselling should take place in a quiet private place where client and provider can hear each other.
Confidentiality must be ensured, both in the process of counselling and the handling of client records. It is essential that counselling takes place in a non-judgmental, accepting, and carryings atmosphere.
Follow These Guidelines While Counselling Clients:
- Create an atmosphere of privacy, respect, and trust.
- Engage in two-way communication with the client.
- Ensure confidentiality.
- Remain nonjudgmental about values, behaviours, and decisions that differ from your own.
- Show empathy for the client's needs.
- Demonstrate comfort in addressing sexual and gender issues.
- Remain tolerant with the client during the interaction and express interest.
- Provide reliable and factual information tailored to the needs of the client.
- Support the client's rights to sexual and reproductive health.
