Once the onset of the second stage has been confirmed you should make preliminary preparations for the delivery. The room should be warm and well lit so that the perineum and vulva can be easily observed.

A clean surface should be prepared to receive the baby (Figure below) using the infection control procedures described before. Spread waterproof covers to protect the bed and the floor. Make sure there is a warm coat and clothes for the baby.
