Treatment of moderate acute malnutrition

A child classified as having moderate acute malnutrition has a higher risk of severe disease. You would need to assess the child’s feeding and counsel the mother about the best way to feed her child.

If there is a supplementary feeding programme in your area you should refer the child to this. You should advise the mother that she should come back to the health facility with the child for a follow-up visit after 30 days.
