Classify for HIV infection

There are five classifications in the Assess and Classify chart:

• Confirmed symptomatic HIV infection
• Confirmed HIV infection
• Suspected symptomatic HIV infection
• Possible HIV infection
• HIV infection unlikely.

As you read, children with HIV are more likely to get infections and get them more often, and pneumonia in particular is a leading cause of hospital admissions and death in HIV-positive children. The correct classification will enable you to identify the most appropriate treatment, if any, for the child.
