Classify for HIV infection
There are five classifications in the Assess and Classify chart:
- Confirmed symptomatic HIV infection
- Confirmed HIV infection
- Suspected symptomatic HIV infection
- Possible HIV infection
- HIV infection unlikely.
As you read, children with HIV are more likely to get infections and get them more often, and pneumonia in particular is a leading cause of hospital admissions and death in HIV-positive children. The correct classification will enable you to identify the most appropriate treatment, if any, for the child.
