Methods of prevention include:

1. Methods of preventing mosquitoes from biting people

  • Sleep under mosquito nets (ordinary or insecticide-treated [ITNs])
  • Screen all windows and doors in the house or atleast in rooms where people sleep
  • Apply mosquito repellant to the skin
  • Burn mosquito coils
  • Wear personal protection; wearing protective clothing (e.g., scarf, long pants, and sleeves to shield the neck, legs, and arms from mosquito bites)

2. Methods for controlling mosquito breeding – larval source management (LSM)

Individuals and communities can reduce mosquito breeding with the following activities:

  • Eliminate/remove places where mosquitoes can lay eggs such as stagnant or slow-flowing waters, vegetation, pools, ponds, swamps, animal hoof-prints filled with water by:
  • Reclaiming the land by draining water and filling with sand.
  • Clearing away vegetation and other matter from the banks of the streams as this will speed up the flow of water.
  • Putting special insecticides in water to kill young mosquitoes found in water. Note: The mosquitoes that bite someone usually breed within 2 km of where they live.

3. Kill adult mosquitoes by:

  • Spraying rooms with insecticides before going to bed.
  • Allowing the inside walls of your house to be sprayed (indoor residual spraying [IRS]).
